London
The Heygate Estate’s regeneration project aims to create a strong sense of place in Elephant and Castle, one of London’s most this crowded and built-up inner-city areas. Its plan is to create new private living spaces of maximum quality while respecting the environment and the character and history of the neighbourhood. RSL was asked to complete the landscape of this residential-led scheme, offering 235 homes of mixed tenure types. RSL worked alongside de Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects, to complete the detailed landscape design by Lend Lease.
The landscape masterplan comprises a framework or tapestry of nine green spaces, all with different characters, which establish a strong relationship to the adjacent building and edges. These range from community gardens, food growing areas, extensive green and brown rooves, natural play areas and rain gardens to entire residential streets, tree-lined to offer a woodland walk experience. The result is inner-city living enhanced and softened by sympathetic landscape design full of green, natural spaces.
