RSL’s challenge was to create a garden, to be enjoyed by the owner’s children and family as well as his business clients, on top of an expansive underground structure. The considerable challenges prompted RSL to find simple, practical solutions, like laying a smart Astroturf lawn, which retained the garden’s classical unity while preventing mud being trodden into the house.
RSL disguised the staircase and railings that led to the subterranean with clever planting and screened the garden from neighbours with Prunus yedoensis trees.
Generous, shallow York stone steps were created to lead up to the main garden so it blended subtly with the terrace at the back of the house.
Another spacious terrace was created at the foot of the garden for an idyllic, al fresco dining and barbecue area. The garden was then magically transformed with up-lighting to create a stunning entertaining space at night.
